Right now, as we speak, the Nixon Jibfest is going down in a “secret NorCal location.” From the (anti-) contest’s early days a decade ago when nobody was quite sure if jibbing would stick, to a full-on Mack Dawg film of the event, to the bragging rights that have followed successful rookies who’ve performed (like Chamberlain below), the Nixon Jibfest has always been a highly influential event in snowboarding. We hit up a few urban legends to see why it matters so much and why it’s been resurrected after a hiatus. JP Walker: This Jibfest is a rebirth of something that meant so much to such a wide audience. I think it spawned a whole generation of snowboarders that view handrails and jibbing as the main aspect of snowboarding. I’m cool with that. Simon Chamberlain: The Jibfest was a contest I used to dream of going to when I was a kid. I got to go to the fourth one and it’s one of the best memories that I have. It’s the most important jib contest out there. It usually has the sickest jibbers in the world, the funnest set-up, and the best formula for a contest: three days of riding for fun, and that’s it. Jeremy Jones: The Jibfest just needs to happen again because everything is so serious and double-corked, ya know?! What’s snowboarding about, man? It’s about friends, hot dogs, and the best snowboarding possible, all with a smile. We are over the stress! There is no other event like it. Even the ones that attempt to mimic I feel do not quite pull it off. To be a part of the way rail events and contests were basically patterned for the past ten years is pretty rad to me. But, most importantly, I love promoting a good time and progressive snowboarding and allowing that to burst in an awesome environment! It’s really hard to explain and help people understand ’cause we close it off to everyone, but that’s how the awesomeness can happen.” Tags: Jeremy Jones, JP Walker, Nixon Jibfest, Simon Chamberlain, The Nixon JibfestThis entry was posted on Thursday, April 28th, 2011 at 3:30 pm and is filed under Events. You can follow any responses to this entry through the RSS 2.0 feed.
