History of Winter X Games

winter x gamesIn 1993 the director of ESPN programme- Ron Semiao gave an idea to organize sport event for people who love extreme sports. After two years of prepering to this event, first Extreme Games (known as X- Games) were organized in Rhode Island (1995). Competing in nine sports attracted 198 000 spectators. Because of ESPN success it wes decided to organize it again in 1996, then the name was changed for X Games. Rhode island played host to the event again. But this time the event attracted 200 000 spectators!! Later, ESPN station published, that first Winter X Games will take place in mountain tourist resort- Summit Snow, Big Lake Bear, California. From 30th January to 2nd February 1997 there were played competitions at snowboarding, mountain bikes race and snowmobile. In 1997 and 1998 Summer X Games took place in San Diego. Second Winter X Games in 1998 and third in 1999 took place in Crested Butte, Colorado. Summer Games were transfered to San Francisco and it stayed there for two years, where this event was very popular. Popularity of Winter X Games wasn’t as good as a popularity of Summer X Games. Big lake Bear attracted 38 000 spectators in 1997 , but this number fell down to 25 000 in 1998 and was rounded to 30 000 in 1999. Winter Games were transferred to Snow Vermont, which attracted 83 500 people in 2000. However this number fell down to 50 000 in 2001. Since then ESPN doesn’t disclose the number of people at X Games. Summer Games took plase in Philadelphia in 2001 and 2002, when Winter Games were transferred to Aspen, Colorado for two years.

Summer X Games is composed of: Stunts Bike, Moto X, Speed Climb, Moto X Freestyle, Wakeboard, Street Skateboard, Aggressive In -line Skate, Downhill BMX.

Winter X Games is composed of: Snowmobile, Snowboard, Ski Slopestyle, X Skier M & W, Skiing Superpipe Practice, Moto X Big Air, UltraCross, Snowmobile Cross, Snowmobile HillCross.

At Winter X Games snowboard is played at following competitions:

  • Halfpipe
  • Slopestyle
  • Superpipe
